Hispanic Heritage month is celebrated through October 15 every year by schools all over the country. There are many different ways to honor the great impacts made on American society by Hispanic immigrants, inventors, authors and scientists. For example, Cesar Chavez is credited with leading the movement to have farm laborers treated fairly for their hard work every day, and Sonia Sotomayor is a leading justice on our Supreme Court. Ellen Ochoa was the first Hispanic-American woman astronaut. You probably know that we will be electing a new President of the United States in November. One of the major candidates has said many unkind and untrue things about Hispanic immigrants, and our school’s Upper Academy students recently interviewed Cross Keys High School students, in DeKalb County, to learn their stories firsthand. In our library, students can find books about different countries, holidays and celebrations of our Hispanic neighbors throughout the Western Hemisphere. For fun, use this Hispanic Heritage Bingo sheet to select books throughout October. Choose 5 books in a row, and you’ll win a prize! Talk to Ms. Burke, Sra. Corrales or Sra. Figueroa for more information. Do you have Hispanic family members or neighbors? Share some ways your family is the same or different from others.
