Prepare for Competition! 2018-19
Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team members met faithfully meeting every Thursday after school to prepare for our competition on January 28, 2018. We're looking forward to next year, and several students have already asked about joining the team (don't forget them over the summer)! Students who are interested in competing on next year's team can complete this form.
The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team at Centennial Academy is an academic club for 4th-8th grade students. The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is a statewide competition in which teams of students compete in a “quiz bowl”- type contest to correctly answer trivia questions about books nominated for the annual Georgia Children’s Book Award. This dedicated team had a great time at our 2018 competition and saw lots of old friends. We held our own and answered lots of questions - every team member carried his/her weight and read lots of books. Centennial fielded two teams this year - Elementary (4th-5th grade) and Middle (6th-7th grade).
The 2018-19 book list will be available sometime in April. Ms. Burke or click here to get the list and reading log. All of the books are in our school library, and also from the public library and local book stores. Some are also available as eBooks through the Open eBooks system or through Tumblebooks. Check with Ms. Burke if you need the password.
Student members should log into our Google Classroom for announcements and to access our book lists, progress chart, and Quizlet. Contact Ms. Burke for the Classroom Code.
Use Quizlet at home and school (you don't have to log in) and practice answering questions - there are flashcards and a matching game students can play for speed practice. If you have a log in, you can create your own study questions - which is a really good idea! Remember to stick to the format, "In the book, __, " and include the page number where you find the answer (also check your spelling, punctuation, and capitalization since others will use your questions). There are questions posted for each book
If you need more information or have any questions about the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl or Accelerated Reader, please contact Ms. Burke at 404-802-8550 or by e-mail [email protected].
