April 2024
Wax Poetic in April!Every April we celebrate the important role that poets and poetry play in our culture. This has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry’s important place in our lives. Here are just a few ways your scholars can celebrate poetry:
Primary History Resources
Atlanta History Center provides a collection of Traveling Trunks containing themed, historic primary sources, clothing items, reproductions, and artifacts to engage students on a variety of topics from Native Lands to the Civil War, World War II, and beyond. Each trunk also includes lesson plans for teachers which are based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence. Trunks can be used in classrooms, libraries, and more as a valuable, hands-on learning experience. For more details about the trunks and to view the rental process, please visit Traveling Trunks | Atlanta History Center or contact Hailey Morgan, Atlanta History Center’s Director of Education.

Books & Badges
Police officers and school resource officers, including our own Officer Alexander, visit APS schools the first week of each month to read to select classes. They read to scholars in the Media Center or in the classrooms.
----------
Graphic Novels are real books!
What do scholars want to read the most? Graphic novels, comics, Anime, Manga! They’re all stories told with a variety of images and adapted text and dialog. Like poetry, the text relies heavily on evocative language, imagery, and figures of speech. Sometimes the text is abridged, but the gist of the story remains. Readers are not just looking at pictures - they’re analyzing story elements and don’t even realize it! They have to use both text and images to make inferences about story and character action. The pictures aren’t just pictures, either. Style and layout of images actually helps drive the plot. Image panels may expand or contract to slow down or speed up action. Comics use visual rhythm and language-based rhythm to support harmony, flow, and pacing. This website and graphic will help you develop support student understanding of comic devices. So let them read graphic novels - it’s a “gateway drug” for reading.
- Check out a book of poetry from the library
- Googley Poetry Projects and Tools - www.controlaltachieve.com/2024/04/goog… include a variety of tech-supported writing activities
- Try some of the activities at Poets.org, including the classroom activities.
- Read a novel-in-verse from our library
- Use words cut out of magazines to create “found poetry”
- Write and illustrate your own poems.
