Hooray! 5th and 6th grade students each have brand new Kuno tablets to use everywhere in school! They can access the Internet, connect with their teachers' Promethean boards, complete assignments and work on research projects. However, Spiderman said, "with power comes great responsibility." You have to be responsible not only for taking care of your tablet but also for how you use it - especially media and e-mail. You already know how to be respectful and kind. What can you do if you see your classmate doing things online that he or she shouldn't do? What are some online safety rules you should follow?

Centennial Academy can be the best school in Atlanta. This will be a historic first year for our school, since we're the first school to choose to become a charter school. You might hear the term "charter school" in the news, but what does it really mean? To some people, it means the same as being a private school. To teachers at Centennial, it means freedom - freedom to be creative and try new things. We can do different things in the classroom, or take the classroom to Georgia Tech if we want!. We don't even have to use textbooks if we don't want to! What does going to a charter school mean to you? If you're a new student, what do you think being a Centennial hero will be like? Share something that seems new or different about our school.
What did you do all summer? Did you go to camp or summer school? Maybe you just slept late and watched too much TV late at night (I did!). Did you read, play outside, or go to 6 Flags? Most teachers go to school in the summer, so we don't really have much time off. Lots of Centennial Academy teachers were at school, getting our classrooms ready for you. Tell us about what you did this summer! The more interesting details, the better. Maybe there will be a prize.... Another school year is nearly over, but new beginnings are on the horizon! This year, we'll be saying goodbye to some of our teachers and hello to some new ones. We'll be changing the building as we get ready for Centennial Place Academy. The library will still be the library - only with materials for big ol' middle schoolers as well as kindergartners. It's a new day, a new way at Centennial Place! What is the main thing you will remember about this year? What will you miss? What are you looking forward to? We're home again! In January we had 3 whole days off from school, and now we're missing 3 more days. When you went home last time, did you think we'd have Snow Days off? Some school buses got stuck in traffic. How long did it take you to get home in the bad weather? Did you ride the bus, walk or did you have to wait for someone to come pick you up? Was it exciting, or a little bit scary? When you're home and stuck inside because of the weather, what do you do all day? You are 100 days smarter! We have been in school this year for 100 days! So, think about 100s. How many pennies make a dollar? 100! How many centimeters make a meter? 100? How long is a century? 100 years! What do you think about 100? These questions might get you started:
Or, complete one of these statements:
Did you make a New Year's Resolution? Lots of people do, but most people don't stick with them. Making resolutions goes with the tradition of starting fresh. In some cultures, this means cleaning house and getting new clothes. Resolutions don't have to be big, though. You could resolve to say "Good morning," to your school bus driver. You could resolve to try a new food that is offered to you. You could resolve to do one helpful thing for someone every day, or say "Hi!" and make a new classmate feel welcome. All of these things can make your school a more peaceful place. What one thing can you do to start the year in a new way? Write a complete sentence (that everyone will see) and call it your New Year's Resolution. What do you think of when you hear the phrase, "Happy Holidays?" Most people in the United States think of Christmas, but did you know there are lots of winter holidays celebrated all over the world? Jewish people celebrate Hanukah (or Chanukkah) which lasts for 8 days. Hindu families in India celebrate Diwali. The Winter Solstice, this year December 21st, marks the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Many African-American families celebrate Kwanzaa as well as Christmas. What holiday does your family celebrate during the winter? Please write 2 or 3 sentences what you've learned about different holidays. Everyone knows what good manners are. Saying "please" and "thank you," taking turns, and sharing are good manners. In our Centennial Creed, we say "kind words are the tools I will use to make my school a peaceful place." Good manners are showing respect for others. How do you feel when someone doesn't use kind words? What about if someone calls you names in class or the cafeteria? Sometimes people forget about good manners when they're online. They think that no one can see them. The thing is, when you're on the Internet no one can tell if you're joking. Anyone can read what you write and some people will make fun of you online. Why would you want to be friends with someone who is mean to you? When you're on a blog, you are representing yourself, your family and your school. Think about what it means to be a good Centennial Citizen. Now think about some time when you've been teased, or maybe when you teased someone else. Tell us about how you can be a good Centennial Citizen on the internet. You have to do a lot of projects at Centennial Place, don't you? You have projects for Spanish, for science, for social studies. Sometimes you have art projects. That's because our school, Centennial Place, uses something called "project-based learning." That means you get to practice what you learn by completing a project. Most people learn best by doing something real, not just reading about it or watching a video. Think about your work, and talk about them with your friends. Now that One Fair is finished for this year, think for a few minutes about what your project was about.
Write a few sentences about One Fair. If you are proud of your project, tell everyone! Remember, other people will read this, so write your best. |
